Yes, this is a working pipe axe much like those of the American early 1800s but made far better than the originals. The same superior and proprietary formula of Armory Outfitters USA Damascus steel is used in the making of this hatchet and the same high-grade rosewood is used for the handle. Although there are predecessors, the British navy popularized the “pipe axe” for use by sailors who almost ubiquitously smoked a pipe, had extremely limited space in ship quarters, and needed a hatchet to serve for ship repairs, cutting line (rope), and for melee close quarter combat in ship boarding both offense and defense. The pipe axe combined the working tool with one of the only leisure activities afforded to sailors of old.
When establishing trade and colonies in the Americas, 16th century American Indians quickly took to favoring the pipe axe used by British sailors and it became a currency in trade for fur and pelts. Now you can experience for yourself, like stepping back through time, the favor and centuries of affinity for the smoking axe and either “bury the hatchet” or “smoke the peace pipe” with others. Always put safety first, when smoked, its best to keep the handmade leather snap on sheath properly in place so that accidental injury is avoided as it comes sharp!
This hatchet is not recommended for the day long hard use of felling large hardwood trees or limbs as it does have the hollow chamber through the length of the handle and hatchet head. Chopping kindling, line (rope), pruning hardwood limbs of 2″ diameter or less, and in hypothetical defense against physical attack by man or beast are examples of stress loads sustainable by the Colorado. If cleaving heavy hardwood is your objective, we recommend purchase of any of our other axe or hatchet designs Armory Outfitters USA offers which is not a smoking axe, or adding one of our other designs to your order of the Colorado so you have any potential work and pleasure covered. There is nothing wrong with having more than one specialized tool to meet different varying degrees of the necessary work you are set to accomplish.
